Using polymer clay in your mosaics:
I just love having texture in my mosaics, and I use Filani Polymer clay for this. The clay is quite soft, and easy to work with. Simply flatten it slightly, cut a shape (my favourites are easy hearts), then add texture by pressing wire swirls/ beads/ stamps or any other item that can be pressed into the clay to give texture. (even funky buttons work)
You can also press charms etc into the clay and bake them. (as long as they can be baked at 130 degrees without melting)
Bake the clay, and glue to your mosaic as normal. I like to use a contrasting grout, which goes into the patterns you have pressed into the clay, emphasising it beautifully
Baking the clay
- Preheat the oven first.
- The curing time depends on the size and thickness of the project.
- Bake in a regular oven at 130 ( Maximum ) for 20 minutes or longer (3hours max).
- A longer curing time will strengthen the article.
- Do not bake at a higher temperature than 130.
- Bake on a tile, baking plate or an oven proof dish. Cover with a lid or tin foil.
- Bake beads on a bed of maizena to prevent shiny patches on the bottom.
- Let articles cool down in the oven.
- Remember that the finished article will stay pliable even after a long curing time. A round and thick article will seem harder than a thin structure.
